Daily Call To Action: January 17th, 2018

Support a long-term funding deal for CHIP and restore healthcare to 9 million kids. The Call – #CHIP

The Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), which was enacted in 1997 with bipartisan support and funds health care for children from working families has expired, and many states will run out of funds by the end of January.

CHIP covers nearly 9 million children, providing coverage for routine pediatric and dental care, as well as coverage for seriously ill children. The program has brought the uninsured child rate down from 15% to 5%.

There is bipartisan agreement that CHIP should be renewed, but Congress failed to renew it in 2017 because of small disputes over details and limited time, instead passing a limited short term extension.

CHIP has provided major benefits for children’s health and the failure of Congress to renew it would be a tremendous blow. Congress must make time to quickly reauthorize funding for CHIP to protect the health of America’s most vulnerable children.

Your Action

Call your three Members of Congress and tell them to promptly reauthorize CHIP to protect children’s healthcare.

Talking Points

  • This is [NAME] and I’m a constituent in [ZIP].
  • I am dismayed that the Children’s Health Insurance Program was allowed to expire.
  • This puts at risk the health and well-being of 9 million children who are losing healthcare by the end of the month, and punishes working families.
  • I urge [Sen/Rep____] to support immediate reauthorization of CHIP, so American children continue to get the care they need.
