Participate in Secure Our Vote’s National Day of Action on September 17, 2019 and contact your Senators to demand they approve funding for election security.
The American electoral system is the very heart of our democracy. Our voice is our vote. In order for our democracy to thrive, or even survive, it is crucial that we do everything we can to ensure that our elections are secure and our voices are heard.
Securing our elections is not a partisan issue. It is the foundation of our democracy. Without secure elections, our system fails, not just for one side of the aisle but for both sides. It is also an issue of national security. We know our elections were targeted by foreign adversaries in the 2016 elections, and have every reason to believe they will be targeted again in 2020.
Russia attacked our election infrastructure. Hackers went after election technology firms and county officials who administer voting. A number of county voter databases within the U.S. were breached by hackers. While there is currently no evidence that they changed any actual votes, it is possible that they tampered with information in other ways.
They also went after a number of political targets and stole large amounts of data which they gave to WikiLeaks. Information that was potentially embarrassing to candidates and the Democratic party was selectively released with the intent to do political damage and influence public opinion as we approached the 2016 presidential election.
We already know what we need to do to secure our elections, but it costs money–more than states themselves are able to provide. The House has already approved funding. Now, it’s up to the Senate.
What You Can Do
Attend a local Secure Our Vote rally on September 17th, 2019, to tell Senator McConnell to hold a vote for election security.
Find your local Secure Our Vote rally here. If there isn’t a rally in your area, there is still time to sign up to co-sponsor one. You can also amplify Secure Our Vote on social media: Facebook and Twitter, and write a letter to the editor about election security using this online tool.
Call your Senators at 202-224-3121 and tell them you support the passage of the election security bill, using the sample script below:
Hello [SEN]. My name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent in [STATE].
In spite of the extensive attacks on our election system, the Senate has failed to hold a vote on a stand-alone election security bill.
Asking states to address a national security issue without federal support is both unrealistic and ineffective. We need federal funding to shore up our election systems.
The threat to our elections is a threat to our democracy. We have 14 months until the 2020 elections. 420 days. What are you going to do to secure our vote?
